In the spring, the municipality will experiment with turning off street lighting at night in several neighborhoods of the city. The goal: to save energy and combat light pollution in order to restore true nighttime and preserve nocturnal wildlife.
The municipality of Quimper (Finistère) is working on the issue of nighttime lighting, in close collaboration with associations such as Loar Gann. "The city is continuing to replace light bulbs with LEDs and has removed the light globes that illuminated in all directions," says Guillaume Menguy, deputy mayor in charge of urban planning. While the energy-saving benefits of LEDs are undeniable, their usefulness in preserving nocturnal wildlife remains a matter of debate. The city has also reduced the power of the lighting.
